context
The company based in Pertuis specialises in the agricultural and forestry machine manufacturing sector.Since February 2022, our Apside Aix teams have been helping and supporting this client in developing a program for the wine sector.The software in question manages the spraying of products in the vineyards from the tractor.The partnership between Pellenc and Apside began in February and will continue at least until July 2022 for this first assignment.

To develop this project, Pellenc called on our resources and expertise. The team working on the project is composed of three people:1 Apsidian working on the Pellenc site, and 2 in an outsourced position in the offices of the Aix branch. For this project, our teams have enhanced their expertise in the very specific profession performed by Pellenc, and are currently mainly working in C++/QT. Our teams bring their expertise within an embedded environment with real-time constraints and with technologies in C/C++, embedded Linux, Multithreading, Yocto and GIT.

Our support
Pellenc was looking to develop a prototype of embedded software to manage the spraying system in the vineyards. Given that it already has software for wide vines, it approached Apside to help it develop a specific program for narrow vines. Although the software is based on the same tractors, the system is actually different. As a result our teams have worked on this embedded software that controls all the parts of the machine, manages the spraying system, opens or closes the valves, moves the product, etc. Our support not only involves developing features that did not exist on the pre-existing system or making adjustments to features that exist on other types of tractors, but also removing bugs, and making corrections and repairs to optimise the operation of the program.

Results
Our teams started their work on a prototype which was initiated by Pellenc in 2021 but left on standby due to a lack of appropriate resources. Thanks to the expertise and commitment of our Apsidians, a first version of the prototype was delivered last May. After having been tested internally, the prototype can be tested in simulated and real-life conditions in the beautiful vineyards of the Champagne region. Thanks to Apside’s expertise, the research and development work is optimised and the creation of architectural and development processes in the industrialisation of plugins in embedded industrial IT is facilitated. A second aspect of the project began during this period.While preserving the technical support on this first project, our teams are now working on a slightly different spraying system, in which the new features of the delivered prototype are adapted and new ones are added.This first phase forged a strong bond founded on trust between Apside and Pellenc which, until then, was not used to working with outsourced subcontractors. Our experts helped to capitalise on the initial test.The project currently runs until the end of July, and we hope to be able to repeat the experience and continue to collaborate with Pellenc on many other projects!
