Controlling and monitoring smart batteries SAFT

Saft is a world leader in the design and production of high-tech batteries for industry. The group is present in numerous sectors, e.g. aerospace, rail transport, telecommunications, health and energy storage.

Controlling and monitoring smart batteries

context

The Software Engineering department aims to create a generic platform to manage and monitor its smart batteries: the CUBE project which emerged at the start of 2018. This is a company funded project, given that our client is in Saft’s “System” department. Its first external client was the European Osmose project for the Grid contract.

Our support

We work in technical support on the client’s premises, integrated into other teams on the Software Engineering service platform. We have implemented a continuous integration and delivery process which allows us to ensure good product quality and be able to develop new features without any risk of regressions.

The steps are:

  • Creating the Linux image
  • Deployment on target
  • Running automatic tests
  • Delivery of the various artifacts
  • Test results

Vincent, Linux expert (support drivers, COTS) and embedded C/C++ developer contributes his knowledge in the “Yocto Project” Linux distribution creation system and is responsible for bringing together the different software components in a “home-based” Linux distribution.

Our teams

The team is made up of about 10 subcontractors, made up of:

  • 1 project manager (Apside employee) who reports directly to the department head
  • 3 Web and Cloud application developers (Spring/Azure)
  • 2 C/C++ embedded developers (including me)
  • 1 test manager (manual and automatic)
  • 2 cybersecurity specialists to comply with the IEC 62443 standard.

We work using the Scrum method, by completing three-week Sprints. With the client working in a “V” cycle, we are trying to reconcile the two approaches by adjusting the Agile method to their needs. Our team does not have an architect or technical lead, each person is experienced in their field and contributes their own solutions, and decision-making is collegial.

Agilité, planning poker

The CUBE project is a pilot project at Saft.We are laying the foundations for a new software development process for the service, in keeping with the most common best practices. The use of a commercially available ruggedised PC (x86) running Linux instead of complex electronic cards is also a new paradigm at Saft. As a result a generic and modular platform can be implemented that can be integrated into existing and future products. Currently, we are starting the R-CUBE project, a variation of CUBE for the railway sector, which will be used to monitor Saft batteries in the TGV designed for the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.
